Sonata for piano no. 14, op. 27 no.2 in C sharp minor by Ludwig van Beethoven, is the sonata known as the Moon Sonata (“Mondscheinsonate”, “Moonlight”), actually called by Beethoven “Sonata quasi una Fantasia”. Beethoven composed this sonata in 1801 and dedicated it to his student, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, with whom he was in love. In 1832, the German poet Ludwig Rellstab took a night trip to Lake Vierwaldstättersee in Switzerland where he compared the melody of this sonata to the moonlight reflected on the lake. Since then the piece has been known as the “Sonata of the Moon”.
